2008 Assembly Keynote Speaker - Jack Best

Keynote Speaker

Jack Best, Zone 32, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator

Jack’s involvement in Rotary International began in 1972 when he joined the Margaretville Rotary Club. Job re-locations brought him to the Sodus Rotary Club in 1975 and the Caledonia-Mumford Rotary Club in 1977 where he was instrumental in initiating its extremely successful youth exchange program. In 1979 he joined the Penfield Rotary Club and served as its president in 1990-1991.
In 1979 District 7120 appointed Jack to its District Youth Exchange Committee. He chaired the program from 1982 – 1985. At the international level, Jack served from 1986-1992 as treasurer of the World Council of Regional Advisors, where he attended international youth exchange conferences in Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Seoul, Mexico City and Portland (Oregon). Jack and Kathy have hosted eight exchange students. Their son, Kevin, went to Finland as a youth exchange student in 1986-1987.
At the district level, Jack served as Area Representative from 1985-1987 and was Director of Vocational Service from 1991-1993. He was its District Governor in 2000-2001. He chaired Multi-PETS in 2000-2001 and served as District Trainer from 2005-2007.
At the Zones 31-32 level, Jack and Kathy have been involved since 2002, in roles that ranged from Chair of the House of Friendship to panel assignments on breakout sessions regarding Avenues of Service, Share-your-Life organ donor program and Youth Exchange. He also co-facilitated District-Trainer training in 2005 and served as a district governor mentor. Jack has been on the faculty of the Rotary Leadership Institute of Zones 31-32 since 2003. Jack chaired the Governor-Elect-Training-Seminar (GETS) at Hershey in 2006. He was appointed Zone 31 Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator in 2007.
In 2005 and 2006 Jack served as an RI Training Leader in Anaheim and San Diego. Jack facilitated discussions on literacy at break-out sessions at the RI Convention in Malmo-Copenhagen. He has represented the RI President at district conferences.
Jack, Kathy and fellow Rotarian son, Joe, are Rotary benefactors. Every family member is a Paul Harris Fellow. Their daughter, Lisa, is Director of Development for Special Olympics in western New York state. Their son, Kevin, succeeded Jack as president of their financial planning firm. Their son, Bill, teaches junior high school math. They enjoy three granddaughters.
