The Evening's Events & Its History

A Message from PDG Mike: On September 12th, our District celebrated the 10th anniversary of our Gift of Life Program. Thirty one (31) children from nine (9) different countries. To me there is no greater program that I know of where we can save the life of a small child and give a new meaning to the word "Peace".

At our dinner we honored the doctors and all those clubs that have been directly involved with our Gift of Life program. To make anything like this a success, we need the support from the Rotarians in our District, and the doctors who volunteered their services. Joining us at our dinner were the surgeons and cardiologist that we have worked with during the past 10 years from both University and Crouse Irving Hospitals.

Many of the Rotarians in our District have been involved with hospital visitations, transportation, official greeters from their club when the mother and child first arrived in our country, and just being available whenever someone was needed. This celebration is our way to say "Thank You" on behalf of all of the families that we have been able to help.

Governor Ward and June attended, along with many of our Past District Governors. My thanks to all involved, including Donna and little Dona - the engine and the angel.

Michael Occhipinti, PDG 1985-1986, Chairman, Gift of Life, Rotary District 7150

President Ralph Froio called the special, evening meeting celebrating the ten-year anniversary of The Gift of Life Program (GOL) to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was conducted and PP Dick Kahler led the group in singing My Country 'Tis of Thee. PDG Edward Paparella presented the invocation. Following the invocation, The Beeches staff served a de-licious turkey dinner with all the trimmings. President Ralph served as the master of ceremonies for the evening. DG Ward Vuillemot was pre-sent to give a general welcome to those in attendance.

PDG Mike Occhipinti recognized the GOL committee and indicated that 36 Rotary Clubs in our District participated in GOL. PDG Mike and his committee presented recognition awards to representatives from all the participating clubs who were present at the celebration. Those clubs unable to attend will receive their awards at a later date.

International Service Awards were presented to two of the participating doctors, Dr. Byrum and Dr. Brandt. Both expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in GOL. Unfortunately, Dr. Alfieris was not able to attend the dinner due to performing an extended surgery.

PDG Mike and Donna Occhipinti were recognized for their unselfish contributions of time and talent. Donna was referred to as the "engine" that runs the GOL. Dr. Brandt commented, "When you see her coming, you'd better get out of her way."

Dona Occhipinti (Little Dona) was recognized with a bouquet of red roses for her involvement with the individual GOL children and their moms. Dona does her best work kid to kid. Language is never a barrier for the children. Laura and George Dmohowski received a bouquet of white roses in recognition of their work providing Russian translation for GOL.

The audience viewed a short segment of a GOL documentary done by a local journalist, Abby Lazar. PDG Mike presented Lazar with an International Service Award. Lazar expressed her appreciation and indicated how much the children involved in GOL have touched her life. She still stays in contact with some of the children from the program.

Robert Gilchriest presented a Paul Harris Fellowship Award to Frank C. Smith, M.D., a pediatric cardiologist involved with GOL. DG Ward Vuillemot presented a Paul Harris Fellowship Award to Rome Rotarian, Rocco Versace. Cecile Versace was on hand to assist with the presentation. Rotarian Rev. Bob O'Meara closed the meeting with a fitting benediction, and President Ralph adjourned the meeting.

Pictures of Ziming Fan and Kang Ying, GOL children from China, were taken by Marlene Brown at the Utica RC meeting December 17, 1999, by Bob Gilchriest at the Rome RC meeting on December 14, 1999 and at the hospital by Fran Combar.

Pictures of Ivan Petryk, GOL child from the Ukraine, were taken by Fran Combar at a joint meeting of the Sauquoit, Oriskany-Whitestown and Greater Utica Sunrise Rotary Clubs on November 10, 1999 and by Marlene Brown at the New Hartford RC meeting on November 24, 1999.

Ivan arrived here on October the 24th along with his mother Maria Petryk. He has had the surgery to repair his heart problems. The operation transformed him into a robust young man who is full of life.

Marie Petryk, Ivan’s mom, gave about a 5 minute talk in Ukrainian, interpreted by Father Joseph Kopchik. She noted that Ivan was born with the hole in his heart, and excess tissue in the arteries. No Ukrainian doctors, or hospitals, could do the required surgery. Marie spent numerous sleepless nights praying that somehow, somewhere, Ivan’s heart problem could be repaired.

She offered "thanks from the bottom of my heart to Rotary District 7150 and to God, for giving my son’s life back to us. I understand the inconveniences and hard work that so many people had to make this miracle happen. Special thanks to Mike and to Donna Occhipinti, who reflect all of the goodness of all of you here tonight. Thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, and technicians at the hospital. And more thanks for having a translator at our side every step of the way; that was very important, as we were scared about how we would talk with people. We will pray every day with thanks for Rotary and District 7150 for giving a mother her son’s life and future. We will tell about this life giving program to the towns, villages, and cities and other people in the Ukraine."

Father Kopchik closed by giving a brief re-cap of thanks and congratulations to District 7150 for the Gift of Life program, and for having Father Bundz and him serve as interpreters and host families for Ivan and Marie. - submitted by Sauquoit Rotarian Fran Combar & Utica Rotarian Marlene Brown

October 18, 1999 UPDATE from PDG Michael D Occhipinti:

Our Gift of Life child from the Ukraine, Ivan Petryk and his mother will arrive Friday evening at the Syracuse Airport at 8:10pm on American Airlines, Flight # 5082. This is a change from Sunday October 24th.

October 12, 1999 Report from PDG Michael D Occhipinti:

We will be starting our District's Gift of Life program for our Rotary Year 1999-2000. Plans have already been put in place and it looks like another exciting year for our District's Gift of Life program. We will be bringing in three children this fall, all at the same time for open-heart surgery. Two will be coming from China and one will come from the Ukraine.

On Sunday, October 24th will arrive from the Ukraine, Ivan Petryk and his mother Maria Petryk. Ivan was born on January 15, 1989 and his surgery date will be on Thursday, October 28th.

On Sunday, November 7th we except both children to arrive from China. Coming will be Zining Fan (Male) and his mother Lixin Chu. Ziming Fan was born on September 30, 1993 and his surgery date will be on Thursday, November 11. Also arriving from China will be Ying Kang (Female) with her mother Xirong Mao. Ying Kang was born on February 20, 1990 and her surgery date will be on Thursday, November 18.

We have 12 clubs involved with these three children. These clubs are: Camden, Eastwood, Greater Utica Sunrise, New Hartford, North Utica, Oriskany/ Whitestown, Rome, Sauquoit, Sherrill, Syracuse, Syracuse Sunrise, and Utica.

Ivan Petryk, Zining Fan, and Ying Kang will be our 29th, 30th, and 31st children that we have brought into our District, from nine different countries, on our Gift of Life program which began back in 1990. From a total of 44 clubs in our District, 36 have been involved with our program.

Donna Occhipinti, who is the medical coordinator for our program, has arranged to have our three Gift of Life families stay with host families in our District and has also been working with translators to coincide with all the hospital visitations that will be done by the sponsoring clubs. Following discharge from the hospital and recovery period, we plan to bring the children to the sponsoring clubs for a Rotary program before their departure back home.

In the spring of the year, April or May, we plan to bring in another child for open-heart surgery. I have had three clubs approach me that wish to become involved. They are Cazenovia, DeWitt and Little Falls. We will be looking for just three more clubs to be involved. (For further information, contact Mike)

How This Child Came About by Rome Rotarian Don Schlueter

In June 1996, a group of Rotarians and other interested parties who were based in Beijing held their first fellowship meeting. This group was later called the Beijing Fellowship Group of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong. The BFG has over forty members from some twenty countries and from every continent on earth, except Africa.

Don Schlueter reports that China does not as yet recognise any Non Government Organisations but will permit groups such as the BFG to meet provided that their membership is confined to expatriates only and that their activities are of a non-political and non-religious nature. The BFG meets weekly at the China World Hotel.

Whilst Chinese citizens cannot join as members for the present, many Chinese people have been invited to attend as guests and some as Speakers at their meetings. Since their formation, the BFG have had numerous projects, individually or jointly, with other Rotary Clubs around the world.

Working with the Rotary Club of Hong Kong and District 3450, projects have included the donation for earthquake relief, flood relief including the re-building of a whole new village which had been destroyed by floods and the installation of water collection system in the west and northern drought stricken areas. Together with Rotary Clubs from Germany, the BFG purchased air conditioners for a children hospital and tented schools to a nomadic group of people in Qinghai Province.

The BFG has a Friendship Agreement with the Rotary Club of Copenhagen and jointly, purchased two incubators to a children’s hospital. This hospital was also the beneficiary of a dental chair from the BFG. On its own, the BFG has also collected numerous used computers for distribution to junior schools in the poorer districts and am providing assistance to two handicapped children’s schools. The list goes on.

The needs of China are overwhelming and the projects are endless. The shorter term challenge for the BFG is the retention of members. The typical job assignment in Beijing is three years so there is a constant turnover of members. Some stability in this area could be achieved once Rotary International is recognised in China and Chinese nationals will then be permitted to join.

Don Schlueter goes on to say, “Should clubs in the District want to assist the Beijing Rotarians, there are things that they could do to support their efforts. I would be pleased to discuss these opportunities with interested Rotary Clubs”. Contact Don

Ambassador of Smiles
by Luqman Abdel Magled

I met a man called the smile maker,
Who travels the earth carrying a special bag of smiles
For children who suffer pain.

When a child in the world smiles,
Light bursts forth from a diamond's facet,
And their faces like rays of sun-light peaceful and pure
Africa, Europe and even Asia.

Although he crossed the ocean many times,
He never let a smile fall from his bag into the sea.
This man now has hundreds of helpers who give out smiles
Called the Gift of Life.

If you should run into the smile maker,
Please say hello to him for me.
His name is Anthony J. Zino,
Ambassador of smiles and hearts.
