8/99 Mexico Matching Grant Update News & Pictures
|
In a letter to Bruce Davis, D7150 Literacy Committee, Lynn Curtis, Director of International Programs at Laubach Literacy in Syracuse, NY shared the following: Enclosed are photos and a report on the progress of the Rotary Literacy and Development Project based in rural communities near Dolores Hidalgo in central Mexico. As noted in the report, leaders and teachers have been trained, and learning/action groups organized and active in ten villages. In all these villages, participants are learning to read and write and to apply their literacy skills in such areas as health, nutrition, cooking and income generation. All of the Rotary grant ($40,000) and Laubach's matching contribution ($20,000 - total of $60,000) have been transferred directly to the project, and participants and leaders are enthusiastically moving the project forward. On behalf of the hundreds of people whose lives are being uplifted through this wonderful project, we again want to express our deepest appreciation to Rotary. Thanks for your generous support and encouragement. NOTE: The Grant was also featured in the Spring 1999 Literacy Advocate publication. |
