Save Money, Enjoy Comrades, Sign Up for the Bus!

With permission from incoming Govenor Herb, we are pleased to announce bus transportation to and from the CanCon 99 Conference in Montreal. We are going to be securing two buses of 47 passengers each (more can be acquired if necessary).

The first bus will leave from the Syracuse Regional Transportation Center, next to MacArthur Ballpark, just off of I-81 at Hiawatha Blvd on Thursday Sept. 30th at 8am. The second bus will leave Friday at 8 am from the same location. Both buses will leave Montreal at approximately 12:30pm on Sunday and return to Syracuse.

The best part of all of this is that we were able to secure these buses for $40.00 per person round trip. This saves everybody $14 per day parking at the hotel, gas, tolls, border crossing waits, etc. and allows all of us to enjoy the trip together.

We need to get an indication of how many people would be interested in traveling with us, so we can see if more buses are needed. Please fill out the sign up sheet below and return to me. All checks should be made out to the Eastwood Rotary Club. We would be happy to do 1/2 now, 1/2 later, for anyone who needed to do that.

Click here for Bus Signup form. Thank you. Gary S. Katz Eastwood VP/PE

A Message from Conference Chair, Stanley Rubenstein

The host club, Eastwood, is hard at work developing all the 100's of details necessary to put a quality conference together. We are still looking for Rotarians who would like to join us in planning and implementing all the details that a Conference demands. If you would like to participate, call me. I'm listed in the Directory.

Presidents and Vice-Presidents: May I take a moment to address you? Are you talking District Conference every week? Do you have a Conference person who is responsible for getting your members to Montreal? If not, why not? The single biggest District function is the District Conference.

It is not only for Rotarians to absorb Rotary information, but is a motivational place for your people to get reacquainted with people and spouses in your club and get to know people in other clubs.

A District Conference can only be as good as the Presidents and Vice-Presidents allow it to be. If you have no interest, or do not show interest, why should anybody in your club go to the Conference?

The best and easiest way to get people to go is for your board to establish a savings account and give interest of up to 10% on deposits of $300.00.

They save each week, and by the time conference comes around, the bulk of the money is there. I have a limited number of sheets on the rules that Eastwood uses to entice members to go... it words... we are the leaders in attendance almost every year.

District Conference just has to better the number of people attending and Montreal is a place that just might pique their interest. The hotel, which is the Radisson Hotel Des Gouverneurs, is withint a short walking distance of Old Montreal. The Subway, if you need it, is in the basement, and the Canadian Currency Exchange is next door.

We plan on having tours of Montreal. They have a real nice casino, and Notre Dame Cathedral is 4 blocks away. We have not even scratched the surface. As far as the content of the Conference itself, there are some surprises in the works.

Let's talk about the hotel for a minute. All meetings will be held on the Mezzanine Level. The Plenary Sessions are scheduled to be held in the Auditorium, which has a classroom style setting of seating. Ample other rooms are to be used for Breakouts. This Mezzaninie Level overlooks the lobby. There are tables and chairs for you to relaz in with an open type setting, much as you would find in a classy restaurant. This area is great for groups to sit together to chat, or for having a drink.

The dining room can seat 1,000 people. The Ballroom is equipped with a multiple lighting system and is a beautiful place for meals. The Radisson is the only hotel in Montreal to have an auditorium.

Let's talk about the Guest Rooms. The Hotel has 28 floors of spacious deluxe accomodations. Windows are floor to ceiling, and depending on your location, you can look out on the city of Montreal or the Harbor. All 550 rooms come equipped with color TV, AM-FM radios, Mini-bar, Iron and ironing board, Hair dryer, inidividual temperature control, and all rooms are adjoining, which would be perfect for hospitality.

Several floors are reserved for non-smokers. The hotel has a heated swimming pool, and indoor health club, sauna, showers and lockers, and a Nautilus equipped gym. We have sampled many of their meals, and a deluxe menu is being prepared for you. If this doesn't entice you, then we are at a loss to know what will.

Talk it up with your members, and let us all go to Montreal the first weekend in October. Montreal is closer than you think - only 253 miles, and almost the same distance as Toronto from Syracuse. Come back to visit this page often, as we'll be posting other information here - such as hotel fees and registration fees - as we get closer. Thanks. - Stanley
