.... During the past year, the Utica Rotary Urban Concerns Committee, under the leadership of PP John Kogut and PP Dave Jones, worked to find a special project that would involve the entire club and improve our region. The decision was made to "adopt" Columbus School.

.... The last week in August, Principal Karen Kunkle addressed the Utica Rotary Club and gave the members an introduction to their "new adoptee". President Linda Allen presented Karen with the first of 34 pencil boxes that would be provided to each classroom. Rotarian Mike Calogero and the Environmental Committee collected the pencils and pens.

.... In mid-September, the Club had an off-site meeting at Columbus to get at first-hand look at the school and discuss issues of concern with the teachers. The meeting was so well attended, we ran out of food! Under the tutelage of Rotarian Malcolm Hill and the Literacy Committee, members signed up to adopt a class, and be a classroom reader throughout the year.

Christopher Columbus Web Site

.... By mid-October, Rotarian Marlene Brown had begun the design and construction of the school's web site. Marlene and Earl Lewis took a variety of pictures at the meetings above as well as at various school functions, and put them up on the web site.

.... The site will continue to grow all year, as Utica Rotary members continue their involvement in this unique partnership that is making a positive impact on the community. Click here to view the web site.

District 7150 Urban Concerns
....Urban concerns were a feature of the District Conference in October '98. On Saturday morning, over 50 children -- acccompanied by parents, girl scout leaders, and representatives of Waterbury Rotary -- arrived by bus at the Conference hotel. DG Ed and DGN Herb teamed Rotarians with the children for an enjoyable scavenger hunt that took the teams all over the Conference center in search of the answers to clues. At the end of the hunt, Rotarians lined the corridor, clapping and cheering everyone on.

....After awards, picture taking, and singing, the children joined attendees for lunch. Each child was given a gift package of books, games, and a Rotary cap. The smiles on their faces and the obvious enjoyment as they watched the Shriners clowns make animal balloons was a joy to behold. All of us were inspired by the program.
