August Update: CanCon's Got a Great Deal Waiting Just for YOU! B"You may be one of over 400 Rotarians and spouses and friends who will be attending the District 7150 Conference in Montreal this weekend (10/1-2-3). You will be joining a large group who will be enjoying fun, food and frolic in an atmosphere of learning and living in the environment of Rotary fellowship. The buses are leaving early so be on time and don't forget to tag your bags. If you go by car you will enjoy the experience of traveling through the beauty and expanse of the North country during your drive to the Radisson Hotel. When you arrive don't stop at the front desk, go directly to the mezzanine terrace to register and get your information packet. The first session starts at 2:45 PM, so don't be late. A great weekend has been planned by the host club (Eastwood) for you to experience Rotary in the finest of venues. DG Herb and his crew will be there to greet you and you will meet Bob Coultas who is RI Pres. Carlos' representative to our conference. See you there"!! PDG Bob Batley BUSES: As you can see from the article below on the Buses, as of 8/17/99 we have 4 buses heading off to Montreal! Everyone or every couple who travels on our buses is asked to bring something to pass (food, cookies, etc.) and drinks for themselves so that we can party a wee bit for 5 hours. ROOMS: The trip to Montreal has been well received and we have doubled the number of rooms for Thursday night. The cost for the extra night, either Thursday or Sunday is $130.00 CDN - translated to US $ as of 8/11/99 it would be only $86.66 (rate is 1.50) This, of course, does not include meals. RESTAURANTS: For those going to stay at the Radisson for Thursday night, you might want to consider having dinner at the TOUR DE VILLE, the revolving restaurant perched atop the hotel. It is the only one of its kind in Montreal. The food is very good and translated to American dollars is not terribly pricey. You might like the buffet. There is also live entertainment. On the lobby level, the bistrot bar Chez Antoine is the perfect spot to have a drink and or dinner. It is open for breakfast and lunch. The food is excellent and the Conference Committee has eaten there several times. WHAT A DEAL FOR KIDS! We encourage you to bring your fanmily. Kids under 18 stay free. We can get your kids Friday or Saturday dinner for $13.95 CDN. Baby sitting is available. CDN, one child - $9.00 per hr., two children - $10.00, three - $12.00, and four - $15. For information on how to pay for any of the above call Stan Rubenstein at 446-1503. LET US CLARIFY SUITES: As of this past Friday, there are still 16 suites left in the hotel. Price quoted below is CDN and is per night. You must add the meal package of $135.00 CDN per person to the cost. Junior Suites: One bedroom suite with a salon complete with small round table & a couch ; Conference Suite: one bedroom suite with a boardroom table for 8 in the salon. It includes a couch as well. $295.00; Maisonette: Split level suite with one bedroom upstairs and living room downstairs with couch and table $395.00; Hiospitality: split level with bedroom upstairs and living room downstairs with 2 couches and tables $495.99 (the 1st three suites cocktail: 10 persons, the Hospitality Suite - Cocktail: 25 persons) HOUSE OF FRIENDSHIP: As of August 15th, Sharon Schoen hasn't had any replies regarding your needs for the House of Friendship. While it may be early for you, we need to know now who is having a table and what equipment you will need. Please call her (number is in District Directory). PRESIDENT'S REPRESENTATIVE: We are very pleased to announce to those who will attend Conference that the President of Rotary International 1999-2000 Carlo Ravizza has appointed Robert A. Coultas to represent him at our District Conference in Montreal. Robert will be accompanied by his wife, Cathie. He is a Past Director of R.I., Regional Rotary FOundation Coordinator 1994-96, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors 1997-98, Chairman of the "Rotary Reaches Out to Children" Presidential Conference December 1998, Alternate Rotary International Representative to the United Nations. Some in the District are familiar with Bob and have heard him speak. He has a superlative speaking voice and will deliver a timely message from President Carlo. We will be pleased to have him in our midst for the weekend. Bob and his wife make Madison, New Jersey their home. Another update to follow soon! Thanks. - Stanley Rubenstein, Conf Chair
Save Money, Enjoy Comrades, Sign Up for the Bus! With permission from incoming Govenor Herb, we are pleased to announce bus transportation to and from the CanCon 99 Conference in Montreal. We are going to be securing as many buses of 47 passengers each that we fill. Currently, our Thursday bus has 36 people already signed up for it. Our first Friday bus is sold out, and we are now into our second Friday bus. (all three of these buses will be departing from Syracuse) The first bus will leave from the Syracuse Regional Transportation Center, next to MacArthur Ballpark, just off of I-81 at Hiawatha Blvd on Thursday Sept. 30th at 8am. The second and third buses will leave Friday at 8 am from the same location. Both buses will leave Montreal at approximately 12:30pm on Sunday and return to Syracuse. The best part of all of this is that we were able to secure these buses for $40.00 per person round trip. This saves everybody $14 per day parking at the hotel, gas, tolls, border crossing waits, etc. and allows all of us to enjoy the trip together. Please fill out the sign up sheet below and mail it to me at P.O. Box 172, Syracuse, NY 13214. All checks should be made out to the Rotary Club of Eastwood. Make sure to indicate on the check which day it is for. We would be happy to do 1/2 now, 1/2 later, for anyone who needed to do that. Click here for Bus Signup form. Thank you. Gary S. Katz Eastwood VP/PE
A Message from Conference Chair, Stanley Rubenstein July, 1999: The host club, Eastwood, is hard at work developing all the 100's of details necessary to put a quality conference together. We are still looking for Rotarians who would like to join us in planning and implementing all the details that a Conference demands. If you would like to participate, call me. I'm listed in the Directory. Presidents and Vice-Presidents: May I take a moment to address you? Are you talking District Conference every week? Do you have a Conference person who is responsible for getting your members to Montreal? If not, why not? The single biggest District function is the District Conference. It is not only for Rotarians to absorb Rotary information, but is a motivational place for your people to get reacquainted with people and spouses in your club and get to know people in other clubs. A District Conference can only be as good as the Presidents and Vice-Presidents allow it to be. If you have no interest, or do not show interest, why should anybody in your club go to the Conference? The best and easiest way to get people to go is for your board to establish a savings account and give interest of up to 10% on deposits of $300.00. They save each week, and by the time conference comes around, the bulk of the money is there. I have a limited number of sheets on the rules that Eastwood uses to entice members to go... it words... we are the leaders in attendance almost every year. District Conference just has to better the number of people attending and Montreal is a place that just might pique their interest. The hotel, which is the Radisson Hotel Des Gouverneurs, is withint a short walking distance of Old Montreal. The Subway, if you need it, is in the basement, and the Canadian Currency Exchange is next door. We plan on having tours of Montreal. They have a real nice casino, and Notre Dame Cathedral is 4 blocks away. We have not even scratched the surface. As far as the content of the Conference itself, there are some surprises in the works. Let's talk about the hotel for a minute. All meetings will be held on the Mezzanine Level. The Plenary Sessions are scheduled to be held in the Auditorium, which has a classroom style setting of seating. Ample other rooms are to be used for Breakouts. This Mezzaninie Level overlooks the lobby. There are tables and chairs for you to relaz in with an open type setting, much as you would find in a classy restaurant. This area is great for groups to sit together to chat, or for having a drink. The dining room can seat 1,000 people. The Ballroom is equipped with a multiple lighting system and is a beautiful place for meals. The Radisson is the only hotel in Montreal to have an auditorium. Let's talk about the Guest Rooms. The Hotel has 28 floors of spacious deluxe accomodations. Windows are floor to ceiling, and depending on your location, you can look out on the city of Montreal or the Harbor. All 550 rooms come equipped with color TV, AM-FM radios, Mini-bar, Iron and ironing board, Hair dryer, inidividual temperature control, and all rooms are adjoining, which would be perfect for hospitality. Several floors are reserved for non-smokers. The hotel has a heated swimming pool, and indoor health club, sauna, showers and lockers, and a Nautilus equipped gym. We have sampled many of their meals, and a deluxe menu is being prepared for you. If this doesn't entice you, then we are at a loss to know what will. Talk it up with your members, and let us all go to Montreal the first weekend in October. Montreal is closer than you think - only 253 miles, and almost the same distance as Toronto from Syracuse. Come back to visit this page often, as we'll be posting other information here - such as hotel fees and registration fees - as we get closer. Thanks. - Stanley |
