Where in the World are we?

Rotary District 7150 is located in the central region of New York State, at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains to the north and the Finger Lake region to the west. It encompasses several major cities including Auburn, Utica and Syracuse. This prime location has opened the door to its place in history with Revolutionary War sites, an international mix of immigrants and major industry locating within its boundaries. Martin Marietta Corporation, an Air Force C4I Research Laboratory, the Masonic Cancer and Heart Research Laboratory, Carrier Corporation, Bristol-Myers Laboratories are all here to name a few. The area is home to Syracuse University, Hamilton College, Colgate University, the State University of New York College of Technology, Wells College, and several other higher education schools.

The District also affords those living here many cultural opportunities from opera at Glimerglass Opera to jazz as we are on the jazz tour circuit. We have symphony orchestras in Syracuse and Utica as well as several theater groups. The Great Artists Series and Broadway Theater League bring international music groups and Broadway stage plays to the Stanley Performing Arts Theater in Utica. Syracuse has similar venues. Cultural centers such as the Everson Museum in Syracuse, Munson-Williams Proctor Institute and School of Arts in Utica, and the Schweinfurth Museum in Auburn are among the best in the United States.

We are near the Canadian border to the north and most of our exchange students have the opportunity to visit Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal while they are here. We are about 250 miles from New York City to the south and Boston to the east. Trips to these cities are also available. We have many lakes and ski resorts within the District's boundary and many more a short drive away. The Adirondack railway from Utica will open in July, 1998, affording an easy access to the Adirondacks for mountain biking, skiing, swimming and hiking.

Sports are readily available, both professional and amateur, with golf, swimming, boating, tennis, hiking, football and soccer, etc. in the spring, summer and fall; and skiing, ice hockey, skating, etc. in the winter. Syracuse University's football and basketball teams are recognized nationwide. High schools offer a large number of after school activities including many intramural sports and school extracurricular activities such as international language, science, computers, etc.
